Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed
An unusually beautiful temple of St. Basil the Blessed, or the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is on the moat, which is adorned on Red Square, is one of the most famous architectural monuments of Moscow. At the sight of the multicolored temple, whose daisies are one more beautiful than the other, the foreigners exclaim admiringly and grab for the cameras, but the compatriots proudly declare: yes, here it is - grand, elegant, even in the difficult Soviet times for Soviet churches.
Regarding the last fact, there is even a historical bike. Allegedly, when presenting the project of redevelopment of Red Square to Stalin, Kaganovich brushed off the model of the church from the scheme, making room for demonstrations of workers, to which the secretary-general strictly replied: "Lazarus, put it in its place." It was or was not, but the temple was one of the few then survived and throughout the second half of the 20th century it was constantly restored.
The Intercession Cathedral was erected in 1565-1561. On the decree of Ivan the Terrible, who gave a vow in case of successful capture of Kazan to build a church in memory of this event. The temple consists of nine churches on one basement and a bell tower. At first glance, it is difficult to understand the structure of the temple, but you should imagine that you are looking at it from above (or indeed look from this angle to the temple on our live map), as soon as everything becomes clear. The main pillar-shaped church in honor of the Intercession of the Mother of God with a tent crowned with a small cupola is surrounded on four sides by axial churches, between which there are four more - smaller. The tent tower was built later, in the 1670s.
Today the cathedral is a temple and a branch of the Historical Museum at the same time. In 1990, divine services were resumed. Architecture, exterior decoration, monumental painting, frescoes, rare monuments of Russian icon painting - all this makes the cathedral unique in its beauty and significance by the Russian temple. In 2011, the cathedral turned 450 years old, during the whole summer, anniversary events were held, on the memorable date inaccessible before visiting chapels were opened, a new exposition was arranged.
